SEO Basics: Link Building
When you move house no one will know where to find you or your new home unless you give people directions. The same thing goes for websites If you want to direct potential customers to a new website, or you want to boost visits to your current website, you need to establish quality links with other websites or web pages. This process is called link building.
There are two types of links in link building: intemal links and external links. Let us take a closer look a both types.
lnternal Link Building:
lnternal link building happens within one website. Here are three ways to increase internal links in your website.
Breadcrumbs:
Breadcrumb navigation usually appears at the top of a web page. It shows the path from the site's home page, through the deeper lying pages of the site, to the web page that the visitor is on, for example, Home >> Business >>Business Support >> Broadband.
In-text Links:
In-text links are links that appear in the body text of web pages. The text is usually made to stand out in some way from the rest of the text, so that visitors can recognize it asa link. With this method you can link a keyword or key phrase on, for instance, your homepage to another page on your site. lfyour website contains a blog, you can also use this method to link to your main web pages from your integrated blog pages.
External Link Building:
The second type of link used in link building is the extemal link. Extemal links are links to external web pages, meaning web pages that are not part ofyour website. The new rule for extemal links is that quality is far more important than quantity. This hasn't always been the case.
The quality of web pages can be checked using the Google Toolbar. The toolbar has a feature called PageRank, which enables you to see what score Google has given to a particular web page. The quality of a web page is expressed in a number from one to ten and is shown when you hover your cursor over the PageRank button. The higher the quality of the web page that links to your website, the more points you will score in Google's eyes. Try it out for yourself by downloading the Google Toolbar here: toolbargoogle.com.
The reason why this works is because the Internet relies on online referrals, or linking, to operate. Linking is the basis of the Internet, and that is why they are so important when it comes to optimizing your web pages for search engines. The easier your web pages are to find, the higher your score will be in the search results.
